Learn to Manage your Moodle website

This is not a Government of Canada website

Backing up a course doesn't include everything

When you backup a Moodle course, not everything is included. There are at least a couple of extra parts of your course which you may want to backup separately. BEFORE this course is over, I highly recommend that you backup your course and restore it onto another Moodle site just to make sure nothing got lost in the process.

Glossary Terms

Although the Glossary activity does get backed-up, any terms added to this activity will not be backed up during a Course Backup. If you want to keep them, these must be backed-up separately.

Exporting the Glossary Terms
  1. Navigate to your course administration
  2. Navigate to your Glossary activity.
  3. Click the activity settings gear.
  4. Click Export entries.
  5. Click Export entries to XML file.
Importing Glossary Terms

Once you have restored your course, navigate your course to your glossary activity and use the Import entries menu option instead of Export entries. Follow the prompts to restore the XML file that you backed up above.

This process is also handy when you want to copy a list of terms from one glossary to another.

Badges

Badges in Moodle courses are only backed-up when you include users in your backup. If you just wanted to backup the course and not the completion status of each student, you don't necessarily want to include students. You should therefore make sure you have saved a copy of the graphic you used to create the badge as well as a print screen or printout of your criteria settings.
